On January 8, Google imposed a complete ban on all gambling advertising in Nigeria. This policy change is aimed at aligning Google’s policies with the new regulatory system in the country.
In November, Nigeria’s Supreme Court handed over-regulation of the gaming industry to the country’s states, nullifying the 2005 National Lottery Act and abolishing the nationwide system. Since then, each state independently decides the regulation of gambling in its territory, which may significantly affect the development of the gambling industry in Nigeria.
Against this backdrop, Google has completely banned gambling-related advertisements in Nigeria. The ban relates to advertisements for internet games where money or other items of value are paid or bet to win a larger amount of money or other items of value.
А также запрещается реклама следующих продуктов, связанных с гемблингом:
- Gambling-related promotional products: vouchers, bonus codes, etc.
- Gambling-related educational materials: books and e-books.
- Information related to gambling: tips, odds, and predictions.
It is worth noting that in February 2024, the House of Representatives considered tougher measures, including a complete ban on sports betting. This is due to alarming statistics released by the country’s National Lottery Fund: more than 65 million Nigerians, which is about 30% of the country, bet about $15 a day on sports. Every day, $975 million is spent on betting. This high activity implies a significant level of gambling addiction, as well as widespread underage gambling.
