A famous Chinese actor Wang Xing, who went missing on January 3, was rescued from a scam center in Myanmar, thanks to a viral post on a Chinese social network and prompt action by Thai police.
The actor came to Thailand to audition for a role in a movie. But as soon as he arrived at the airport, he was met by thugs instead of producers. They quickly forced him into a car and drove him across the nearby border to Myanmar. There, he was shaved bald and placed in a building that already housed at least 50 workers of different nationalities.
Wang Xing “was forced to undergo training as a fraudster, learning how to type scam messages intended for Chinese. He was trained for two days but had not yet been trained in voice calls or conversations,” Khasod English reported.
On January 5, Wang Xing’s friend posted a post on the Chinese social networking site Weibo about the missing actor: “We have no choice but to use the power of the Internet to amplify our voices”
The appeal went viral and caught the attention of the Chinese government after it was shared by some of the biggest celebrities, including singer Lay Zhang and actor Qin Lan. According to Thai media reports, the actor was found on January 7 during a rescue operation in Myanmar. The quick but mysterious rescue has also raised questions about the fate of those who remained trapped inside the scam centers.
The UN Office on Drugs and Crime recently reported that billion-dollar cyber fraud operations are rapidly growing in Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia.
