Meta plans to introduce ads on its Threads app in January 2025, Information reported, citing three people with direct knowledge of the company’s plans.
The Threads app was launched in July 2023 as a rival to X (Twitter) in an attempt to wrest users away from the microblogging site during its takeover by billionaire Elon Musk. Threads will soon be able to attract advertisers who are cautious about spending on advertising on X (Twitter) due to concerns that their brands could appear alongside malicious content.
Meta spokesman Matthew Tai recently confirmed that Meta is not currently generating revenue on Threads:
“Since our priority is to build consumer value first and foremost, there are no ads or monetization features currently on Threads”
According to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the app reached 275 million monthly active users in October 2024, indicating rapid growth.
Although Meta previously said it would refrain from advertising on Threads until the app is “on its way to a billion users,” Threads is planning to allow a small number of advertisers to create and publish ads on the app. The initiative is being led by a team from Instagram’s advertising division.
Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri confirmed that Meta plans to bring ads to Threads.
“I understand why people are concerned, but at the end of the day we’re a business and Threads has to make enough money to pay the people and servers that are needed to run the service and provide it to users for free,” Mosseri explained.
In August, X (Twitter) posted an image of what a promotional post on Threads would look like:
