In Argentina, the Chamber of Deputies has approved a new law that restricts the advertising of gambling and betting. This law aims to reduce the negative impact of gambling on teenagers and people at risk of addiction.
The essence of the law is that gambling advertising will no longer be allowed on television, radio, social media, streaming platforms, and outdoor advertising. Betting companies will also be banned from sponsoring sports teams, stadiums, and cultural events. In addition, celebrities and influencers will not be allowed to be used to promote gambling. Advertising will be allowed only in licensed gambling halls and agencies. It must contain the warning, “Gambling can be harmful to you and your family,” as well as information on where to get help.
The bill was supported by 139 lawmakers, 36 were opposed and 59 abstained. It now goes to the Senate for consideration.
The main goal of the new law is to protect teenagers and other vulnerable people from being influenced by gambling. Many support this law, believing that gambling advertising has a particularly strong effect on young people and contributes to the development of addiction. However, some fear that such restrictions could lead to an increase in illegal gambling sites and establishments.
If the Senate approves the law, Argentina will become one of the first countries in the region to impose strict restrictions on gambling advertising.
