Indonesia’s Minister of Communications and Digital Technology, Meutya Hafid, has called on major social platforms such as Meta, TikTok, and X to actively contribute to the fight against online gambling.
According to the minister, platforms owned by these technology companies continue to provide online gambling organizers with space to promote their illegal activities.
“I must mention that Meta, TikTok, X, and Instagram are included. We ask them also to take on a role in helping Indonesia combat online gambling, and I think it is mandatory,” Hafid emphasized.
She also noted that the new government of President Prabowo Subianto has not yet directly approached the organizers of electronic systems (PSEs) running social media platforms to discuss steps to eradicate online gambling.
However, Hafid explained that PSEs should already be aware of stricter controls on the use of platforms to prevent the spread of negative content such as online gambling propaganda.
“We appeal to them, who, of course, can also benefit from Indonesia’s wide market share and social media market share, to contribute. This is our common desire, not just the government, for the people also want this,” the minister said.
It is worth noting that as part of the fight against online gambling, the Ministry of Communications and Digital Technology has blocked access to 283,230 pieces of content related to online gambling between October 20 and November 13, 2024.
The extensive blocking included 11,792 pieces of content on the Meta platform, 2,332 pieces of Google/YouTube content, 1,153 X accounts, 70 Telegram accounts, and 38 TikTok accounts.
