The man had a heart attack after winning a jackpot at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore over the weekend.
In the videos that spread on social networks, it is said that the man died of cardiac arrest, however, this information turned out to be fake. The lucky man managed to survive the incident.
At the famous casino owned by Las Vegas Sands, one of the regulars placed a large bet and hit a jackpot of 4 million Singapore dollars ($2.95 million). Shortly after winning, the man began celebrating and went into cardiac arrest. Videos show him lying on the floor, there are security guards and doctors near him trying to provide first aid. The man reportedly suffered a massive heart attack but survived.
It is worth noting that fatalities amidst strong emotional shocks when playing casino games are quite common. One of the most infamous cases is the story of the “Suitcase Man”.
On September 24, 1980, William Lee Bergstrom borrowed money and went to the Binion’s Horseshoe Casino in downtown Las Vegas. The man brought two suitcases to the casino: one was empty, and the second was filled with $777 thousand, in today’s money it is about $2.9 million. The man risked all the money on craps and to the surprise of all present won. Later Bergstrom said that he planned to commit suicide if the bet lost. However, the bet was successful, and for the next four years, Bergstrom was traveling the world.
He returned to Las Vegas on March 24, 1984 with another suitcase full of cash. The player bet $538,000 ($1.6 million in today’s money) and won again. In November of the same year, Bergstrom came to Binion’s again and bet $1 million ($3.6 million) but lost.
The tragedy of the whole situation was that Bergstrom could not recover from the loss and just three months later (on February 4, 1985) after the unfortunate incident, his body was found dead in a hotel room. According to the investigation, Bergstrom committed suicide.
