A panel of judges at the Medan District Court (North Sumatra) sentenced 20-year-old student Indah Siska Sari to 2.5 years in prison and a $3,000 fine for advertising a gambling website via her Instagram account. She will be given an additional two months in jail if she fails to pay the fine.
The investigation began on October 24, 2024, after information was received by Medan police that there was a person at Cafe Dazat who was allegedly posting links to an online casino site on the personal Instagram account.
Police arrived and arrested the suspect. While examining the phone and checking the Instagram account, they found online gambling-related postings in the archive. During the arrest, the accused Indah Siska Sari admitted that she used her Instagram account to promote and advertise the gambling website Hopeng.
The judge noted that defendant Indah was found guilty of violating Section 45 paragraph 3 of the Electronic Information and Transactions Act No. 1 of 2024 (ITE) under the first alternative charge.
The defendant’s actions were against government programs related to the eradication of gambling crime, which was an aggravating circumstance.
“With respect to mitigating circumstances, defendant Indah has confessed and repented, and she has no prior criminal record,” Judge Vera said.
Indah received approximately $18 for her work every 15 days.
“The total amount of money received from her work from August 2024 through October 6, 2024, was $50, and that money was spent on college” – the state attorney stated.
