OpenAI is going to present its AI-powered Internet search product to users on Monday. Bloomberg and The Information have previously reported that OpenAI (controlled by Microsoft) is developing a product that will be a worthy competitor to Google’s search engine and Perplexity, a well-known startup based on AI.
The announcement will be possibly made a day before the annual Google I/O conference, which will be held on May 14. The tech giant is expected to show new features related to AI and online search.

OpenAI previously declined to comment on rumors of a new search product, but later Sam Altman at X clarified:
not gpt-5, not a search engine, but we’ve been hard at work on some new stuff we think people will love! feels like magic to me.

According to Bloomberg, OpenAI’s new product is an extension of its flagship ChatGPT product, and, in turn, it allows ChatGPT to take direct information from the Web and include quotes and images.
ChatGPT is an OpenAI chatbot product that uses advanced artificial intelligence models to generate human-like responses to text queries. Read more about ChatGPT in our article: https://cpa.rip/services/chatgpt-guide/.
ChatGPT has long served as an alternative option for gathering information from the Web, although the service has some difficulty in providing accurate real-time information from the Web. Previously, OpenAI’s ChatGPT became available to users on the Bing search engine for a paid subscription.
At the end of 2022, ChatGPT was called the fastest application with more than 100 million active users. However, worldwide traffic to the ChatGPT website has dropped significantly over the past year and is only now returning to the high numbers reached in the spring of 2023.
Web search has proven to be a key area for the artificial intelligence industry and OpenAI has to respond to growing competition from other companies and their products.
For example, Google has also announced the launch of new generative AI features for its eponymous engine.
And the Perplexity neural network (valued at $1 billion) was founded by a former OpenAI engineer and gained popularity for having an AI-powered search interface. The service shows citations in results and images, as well as text in answers. Based on the published data, the startup attracted at least 10 million active users every month.
