Romanian MPs have proposed tightening the rules on access to gambling and restricting its advertising. The bills, introduced by Raluca Turcan (PNL) and Diana Stoica (USR), provide for an increase in the minimum age for participating in gambling and a ban on online gambling advertising from 6:00 a.m. to midnight.
MP Raluca Turcan called the increase in the age limit ‘a simple change with serious consequences,’ noting that similar measures are already in place in Portugal, Greece, and Moldova.

According to the initiative, persons under 21 will now be prohibited from participating in any form of gambling. Also, casino and betting ads won’t be allowed on the Internet during the day: there’ll be a ban from 6 a.m. to midnight. Besides, influencers, athletes, and public figures can be banned from promoting gambling.
“We have a duty to protect our children from the threat of gambling addiction,” said MP Diana Stoica.
The issue of mandatory warnings about the dangers of gambling online and offline is also being considered, similar to those for tobacco and alcohol products.
The amendments are intended to change the current legislation, in particular Emergency Ordinance No. 77/2009.
If the bills are approved after consideration by parliament and relevant committees, Romania will become one of the European countries with the strictest rules on advertising and access to gambling.
