In Thailand, 18 influencers suspected of organizing illegal broadcasts of football matches and promoting gambling websites have been detained. The operation took place simultaneously in six provinces across the country.
Raids conducted by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) in conjunction with the Internet Activity Monitoring and Analysis Center covered Bangkok, Roi Et, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, and Samut Prakan. According to the investigation, the suspects acted as commentators for live match broadcasts on unlicensed platforms, which featured advertisements for gambling sites.
The police report that the funding came from foreign investors who hired Thai influencers to attract audiences and encourage betting. It is estimated that each major broadcast attracted more than a million viewers, with monthly turnover reaching around $6.1 million.
During the searches, electronic equipment worth more than $30,000 was seized, including computers, phones, and recording devices. According to police, streamers received between $30 and $60 per match, as well as additional bonuses for attracting new players.
All 18 detainees are charged under Section 12 of the Gambling Act, which provides for liability for promoting or encouraging participation in online gambling. The maximum penalty under this article is one year’s imprisonment or a fine of $30.
It is known that the suspects have been transferred to the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD) for further investigation.
