In 2023 Slovakia’s betting volume reached €21.4bn, confirming the continuous growth of the gambling industry. The online market proved to be the main favorite, attracting 90% of players.
Contributions to the state rose by over €50m year-on-year to more than €301m.
Online betting totaled – €93m, fixed odds – €80.48m and land-based casinos contributed – €61.9m.
The regulator’s director, Martin Bohoš, has expressed concern about the rise of illegal casinos. There were 2,511 inspections in 2023, 201 more than the year before. Some municipalities are looking to restrict gambling, which could cut industry revenue by 22% in 2025 and push players to enter the illegal gambling market.
“I would like this topic to be subject to a wider social discussion, because if someone feels that by banning legal gambling in the territory of a larger city, gambling will be dealt with, yes, legal gambling will be dealt with, but the risks of illegal gambling will remain high.” – Martin Bohoš.
Slovakia regulates sports betting, horse racing, poker, and casinos. Lotteries and bingo remain under the monopoly of state-owned Tipos company.
