Meta has added the Choose an audience for each ad creative feature, which lets you specify the audience’s age and gender separately for each creative within a single ad set. You can now run creatives for different audiences without creating a separate ad set for each one.
For example, within one ad set, you can run several creatives, some for men and others for women. You can specify the appropriate gender and age for each one while keeping the ad set itself on broad targeting.

There are limitations: the minimum age in the ad set settings must be from 18 to 25, while the maximum age must be 65+. The ad set must target both genders, and the minimum age for an individual creative cannot be lower than the one set in the ad set.

The feature does not work with Advantage+ Audience. You also cannot use it together with age or gender suggestions. At the same time, the selected age and gender are not strict restrictions. Meta may show ads to other users if it believes they are more likely to complete the target action.
Starting October 19, the feature is available to partners through the Marketing API. It is also beginning to appear in the regular Ads Manager, but it is not yet available to all advertisers.
