Cancun
Cancun is a relatively young city on the northeastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo. The modern resort began to be built almost from scratch in 1970 as Mexico’s first major comprehensively planned tourist center. At the same time, the history of the region itself is much older and closely tied to the Maya civilization. The first hotels appeared in the early 1970s, and in 1974 Cancun began operating as a full-fledged tourist center.

Today, the city is divided into a mainland area and Zona Hotelera, a resort zone stretching along the Caribbean Sea with beaches, hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues. This is where Affiliate World Americas will take place, at Cancun Center on Boulevard Kukulcán.
What to see in Cancun
Mayan Museum of Cancun is one of the city’s main cultural attractions. Its collection features archaeological finds from Quintana Roo and other regions of Mexico. The museum is combined with the San Miguelito archaeological zone, so in one visit you can see both the museum exhibition and preserved Maya structures.
El Rey Archaeological Zone is another archaeological complex located directly in Zona Hotelera. It preserves the remains of an ancient Maya settlement, plazas, and numerous structures. Its location on Boulevard Kukulcán makes it easy to fit into your free time without traveling far beyond the resort zone.
Playa Delfines is one of Cancun’s best-known public beaches, with a wide shoreline and open views of the Caribbean Sea. It is also home to the El Mirador viewpoint and the famous colorful CANCÚN letter sign.
Isla Mujeres is located opposite Cancun and is suitable for a half-day or full-day trip. The island is known for its beaches and snorkeling spots, while its more compact development differs noticeably from the large hotel complexes of Zona Hotelera.
Tulum requires a separate day, but is more interesting from a historical perspective. The Maya archaeological complex is located directly on the Caribbean coast. It is best to plan a trip there before or after the main Affiliate World days, since the journey from Cancun takes up a significant part of the day.
Restaurants and evening plans
Cancun Center is located in the Punta Cancun area, so after the business program ends, most dinner and evening meetup options are available within Zona Hotelera. Well-known restaurants include Harry’s Prime Steakhouse & Raw Bar, Porfirio’s, Puerto Madero, RosaNegra, Ilios, Taboo, and Tora. Many are located directly along Boulevard Kukulcán.
Punta Cancun is also the center of the resort’s nightlife. Coco Bongo, The City, and other major venues are located here. Due to its proximity to the conference venue, you can continue your evening in the same area without traveling to downtown Cancun.
If you are interested in the city rather than the resort area, you can head to Downtown Cancun. This area is home to Parque Las Palapas, Mercado 28, and Avenida Nader, with restaurants, cafes, and stores. Its atmosphere differs noticeably from Zona Hotelera.
If you have a few free hours, beaches, Museo Maya, or El Rey are the best options. It is better to set aside a half-day or full day for Isla Mujeres, while trips to Tulum and other distant archaeological complexes should be planned separately from September 7-8, when the main Affiliate World Americas program takes place.
What to try in Cancun
Cancun’s cuisine combines Yucatán Peninsula traditions with Caribbean seafood and modern Mexican gastronomy. One of the most distinctive local dishes is cochinita pibil: pork is marinated with annatto (achiote) paste and citrus juice, then slow-roasted. It is usually served with pickled red onions, habanero salsa, and tortillas.
You should also try sopa de lima, a Yucatecan soup with chicken or turkey, lime, spices, and strips of fried tortilla; papadzules, egg-filled tortillas with pumpkin seed sauce; and panuchos, small tortillas with beans, meat, vegetables, and pickled onions. Along the coast, common seafood options include ceviche, grilled fish, shrimp, and octopus dishes. To experience regional cuisine specifically, it is better to look for restaurants labeled cocina yucateca rather than limiting yourself to international venues in Zona Hotelera.
What to bring back from Cancun
For souvenirs, consider items connected to Yucatán culture. One of the most distinctive options is a handmade hammock: woven hammock production remains a traditional craft in the region. You can also find embroidered clothing and textiles, ceramics, wood products, and jewelry made by local artisans.
For food souvenirs, you can bring back achiote, an annatto seed-based blend used to make cochinita pibil, local habanero sauces, Mexican chocolate, and coffee. To buy handicrafts, you can visit Mercado 28 in Downtown Cancun, but prices there are aimed at tourists as well, so it makes sense to compare offers from several vendors. For food products, factory packaging is more practical, especially if you will be taking your purchases across the border.
