TikTok is exploring the possibility of adding money transfers between users directly through direct messages. References to the new feature were found in the code of the current version of TikTok for iPhone in the United States.
According to the app’s code, the recipient will be able to accept a transfer by tapping a button before the specified deadline expires. The sender will be able to track the payment status through push notifications or incoming messages, and text can be added to the transfer itself.
If the feature launches, TikTok Pay will be used to process transfers. The service is currently available in Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand, where it is used to pay for purchases in TikTok Shop.
However, the feature is not yet being tested in any country. A TikTok spokesperson confirmed this to Bloomberg. The company also does not guarantee that transfers between users will launch at all.
TikTok and ByteDance are also continuing to develop their financial services segment and hire specialists to work on such products in the United States and other countries.
